Where does all this stupidity come from? Fear of facing a primary opponent? Anyone who would vote to devastate millions of people in order to keep a job is far too pitiful and sick to be in office anyway. People who lose their much-needed benefits will be driven to vote even if they normally don't and all those fools will lose their jobs anyway. And we must all do everything we can to see that happen.

Nancy's avatar

I was a professional, albeit not in government. I have a terminal degree in my field. I can't imagine being so easily intimated by the blustery MAGA group. So what if standing up means I lose my job. I'd find another one. Being subject to intimidation and bullying would only want to make me hold my ground even more strongly--unless, of course, I bought the ridiculousness behind the bullying, which may be the case for all of those who voted for this bill in Congress. Maybe they truly are followers, not leaders. Too bad!

Michelle Jordan's avatar

Wonderful words! I only wish there were more like you. People, most especially women, who refuse to be bullied and stick to what we know to be right, are the people who should be having the most influence in the world today.

Nancy, I believe there are several factors that influence the decisions made by Republican lawmakers. First, Trump has rendered them spineless. There are few Republicans who will "fall on their swords" in service to the republic. Second is a blind loyalty to the myth of tax cuts. Tax cuts never pay for themselves and always add to the deficit. Large tax cuts to the wealthy does not lead to a significant increase in economic activity. The money is more likely to be spent on a new yacht or airplane or vacation home. Yet, the myth continues. Of course, large tax cuts for billionaires and millionaires results in large donations to Republican PACs. Finally, legiators who are loyal are looking at their payoff when they finally leave Congress - a nice job with lobbyist or consulting group.

Isn't it great how those with THE best healthcare, FOR LIFE, can just take most of it away from others and never bat an eye.

Nancy's avatar

OK. I'll add ignorant to my list since the trickle-down theory of economics, as you've noted, does not work. Never has. We know this. And also, of course, greed for what goodies may come their way for supporting the bill.

Michelle Jordan's avatar

While nothing ever trickles down, only a small amount of this money gets spent on yachts, etc. Most of it just sits around in (probably off-shore) accounts perpetuating itself and doing nobody at all any good.

Pamela Wing's avatar

Oh it trickles down as the piss all over us.

Theresa McGinness's avatar

So true. It's been promised every time and fails to deliver. Trickle down and all that nonsense.

Where does all this stupidity come from? DJT, Inc.

Michelle Jordan's avatar

Inc. is right -- DJT is NOT a human being.

He’s an authentic SHIT! He stole the election! They who supported him the Latinos Blacks Whites who drank his Kool-aid aer now in HELL Up Shits Creek! I

I am not sorry for them!

Michelle Jordan's avatar

Trump and his friends BOUGHT the election, they didn't outright steal it. And I want to say that if voters' opinions and votes were based on any kind of objective and readily available information instead of an emotional reaction to the horrible life so many Americans are forced to live due to our broken system, this could not have happened. I also want to say that eventually Trump will go to his just reward in hell and not one person on this earth will remember him kindly. I don't have it in me to feel sorry for him now while he's causing so much damage, but I hope I can find it in myself to feel sorry for him then.

Chazxx's avatar

I see your points and they are just like mine. Rand Paul and the rest of the Senate holdouts didn't plan their strategy well enough to get people in line to say "no" to this bill. Too bad for everyone else, ✅️ right ✅️ 😪

Michelle Jordan's avatar

I think we will just have to hope (and agitate to help it along) that people who will suffer the worst will get up and demonstrate and then vote. I have heard it will take a generation or longer to undo most of these harms, but unless people resist and vote, and Democrats actually give us people to vote for who won't just be seen as the lesser of two evils, it could be worse than that.

I have to disagree that many members of the Senate and House are either rational or moral. What you do is what you are. They act against their own best interests by harming their constituents, so how is that rational? And hurting millions to gift the wealthy with yet more wealth is not a moral act, so they are not moral either.

Macman's avatar

We can only hope that this BBB will cost the GOP everything that they are taking away from the rest of us.

One thing that they can’t take away is our voices and we must make them heard.

Now the House gets another whack at making this Big Beautiful Bill into a Big Bilious Bill.

Eva Porter's avatar

I wonder if they’re not worried about 2026 voters because they don’t intend to let us get that far- you know. VOTING. I put nothing past these cowards.

Kristine's avatar

This is also my biggest fear. Trump will end voting. Period.

I'm afraid to think that, but I believe that is what they are going to try and do.

Shannon Walsh's avatar

I don't think there's a chance in hell that they are going to let another election happen - they aren't going to take the chance of losing power.

Republicans just cancelled an election in FLA. OF COURSE it's being challenged and IF they get lucky this will go to the Supreme Court whos corrupt right wing majority members will say that elections can be called or cancelled anytime Repugs little black heart's desire.

Hi Eva, I have been concerned about the same issue. It’s almost as they know something we don’t.

Yesterday, I called my representatives office asking about the new detention center down in “alligator alley “. She actually said “I don’t know”, when I asked who was paying for it. Forget any answers regarding the environment, there was no response. I then asked her about why people here legally were be arrested when they are following the law and checking in at immigration offices across the country, she said “that was fake news”. I asked about why ice agents were wearing masks, the same answer “they’re afraid for there lives”. I’m so disgusted, but I keep calling.

jonquist1's avatar

Even the original NAZIS didn't wear masks. So there's that.

Eva Porter's avatar

Sometimes I call mine just to bitch. Last time I called - yesterday- got voice mail. I called Monday and the kid who answered was actually polite when I asked about the FL detention center and wanting to denaturalize Mamdani…his response to that was “oh, that just happened this morning”… they need to know that we are NOT going away even if all it means is that we’re being a pain in the ass

Rumor has it that in the midterms, the GOP is going to challenge a lot of Democratic wins. It costs a lot of money to fend off legal challenges. I’m guessing that some may not be able to fight the challenges. Cash Patel is already drumming up suspicions about Chinese interference. Remember when we used to just go and vote, confident that our votes would be counted with a minimum of challenges.

Eva Porter's avatar

Yeah. I’ve seen that too.

D Irvine's avatar

This makes me sick. Are there no Republicans with enough backbone to say no, consequences be damned? Or do they share Marco Rubio’s infinitely flexible backbone?

Paul's avatar

Will there be an emergency day of action to call Reps asking them to vote no?

Tomorrow MoveOn in concert with other organizations have a phone bank scheduled for 6 PM EDT. On Monday and today it was to call a target population likely to be affected by Medicaid cuts, attempt to educate them and offer to connect them to their senators. I'm sure tomorrow it will be focused on targeted representatives. There will be brief training at the beginning, a script, and other help. You join via Zoom at the beginning and then switch to their automatic dialer on a different web page. You do not call from your personal phone. You need to preregister though. I would include a more direct link but it shares my personal information. Instead go to www.mobilize.us/moveon. There are other actions for tomorrow shown there as well.

Once again our politicians are refusing to do right by their constituents and bow the knee to Trump. I, for one, am going to continue to attend protests and hope the number of people attending continues to grow until the outcry can no longer be ignored!

Michelle Warner's avatar

This makes me sick to my stomach about this gigantic ugly bill!!

Joannie Reeves's avatar

Adam, thank you, and before I say what I want about this ugly situation this Bill puts us in I want to explain my roots. I know what living in poverty is like. My roots and heart is in the Ozarks where I learned my values growing up on a small share cropped Dairy farm. The land was surrounded on three sides by the Mark Twain National forest, we did not have running water, but we had electricity thanks to FDR. We lived off the land, and when my mother and I moved to the city did I realize just how different we lived; it was a step back into time like living on the set of Little House on the Prairie, it was hard and the people there were intelligent , believed in education, but my grand parent lived on a wing and a prayer until 1990 when my grand dad passed away.

I have come to the conclusion that maybe Medicaid needs to be set up as a type of basic healthcare insurance that people can buy into on a sliding scale so that everyone can have healthcare. It would be of no cost to the super poor and indigent, but for those that cannot afford to purchase insurance it would be something that would cover them and would allow them to access a healthcare system that is designed for the ones that can afford it. I right now do not need this but I see and know people who do. I made it into the middle class financially, but will one day not be in the middle class when I retire, I would happily pay a small tax to make health care to all.

There is no excuse or reason that within a Country that subsidize the richest corporations that we cannot figure out how to insure that the poorest among us have healthcare!!!!!!!!

I Resist's avatar

Joannie, thank you for sharing your story! There was a Chinese woman who texted around midnight during the pandemic in an attempt to elude the authorities. Millions would wait for her posts. The best one I remember is paraphrased, "A society can't be judged by how many billionaires, cars, big houses etc it has. It has to be judged by how it treats and cares for it's most vulnerable citizens." I think the US was doing fairly, but under this Administration I give it somewhere between a D-- and F

Joannie Reeves's avatar

Thank you, I would give it an F when it comes to being decent. I think what we are witnessing is the ability of a governing party selling its soul to the richest thinking that a few crumbs of empathy will roll down hill to the valley.

Sally Sprague's avatar

The rich get richer, the poor gets poorer. The next election can’t come soon enough!

Cindy Marshall's avatar

What a perfect picture you used to explain do depict this awful big, ugly bill. This voting exercise really highlights how brave and honorable you and Liz Chaney were to give up your identities to do what was right! How cowardly are these other Republican lawmakers are! Despicable!

It will be up to we the people to change this moral downturn to our country.

God is weeping and it's 3pmEST and many of us right now are praying for a miracle 🙏🏻

Hi Adam,

Just one more Republican senator.

This could be you. Come back to Illinois and make a stand. Follow Lincoln's path. The people are waiting.

As Lincoln said even in defeat to Douglas, , " the fight must go on"!

Susan Sommer's avatar

Which is why I supported Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland in his run for Senate. He would have turned the tide.

Ronin Core's avatar

The Republican party has become a party of grifters. We must hang on and hope there will still be midterm elections and the Democrats win. I don't know how Republicans think they'll get re-elected by stealing from the poor and middle class. Our numbers overwhelm the rich and our votes should too.

Philip Hopkins's avatar

You are right Adam. However this Bill will destroy a lot of the maga cult members. And unfortunately they bought into the lies and deceit this administration told them.

They thought they would be for the working class and yet many people decided to vote for him anyway thinking he would be hurting the black and brown communities.

And because of their prejudice ideology the rooster has finally came home to roost.

The Black And Brown Communities have always survived be slighted by the wealthy.

The majority of the black and brown communities will do what ever is necessary to continue to survive and support each other.

Politicians don’t care about the poor and the needy.

They don’t want to speak truth to power and do the right thing for all the people.

We no longer have public servants who fight for the people.

They only care about their titles and fleecing the poor and middle class.

Wake up people. Trump just attacked his own supporters.

Stay Safe Adam
