My husband pointed out to me that what we are going through is normal for a young country. Times are different that when most of our allies were fighting and going through growing pains. There are no feudal lords or serfdoms officially (interesting how our current situation is similar but that is another discussion), but we are at an inflection point of our history. Now is when we have the opportunity to take what was good about our country and fight to make it better. If we tune out and don't face what is in front of us we will lose everything we love and actually made America great.
That is very true. At 250 years of age, as a country, US is still a baby. For perspective, when France was 250 - roughly around 1095 - they were into Crusades. It was just becoming a big thing - Holy War and all the consequences.

My native Ukraine - then Kievan Rus at the age of 250 (1130s), was messed up to no end. Following the religious unification by Princess Olga and her grandson - Prince Vladimir, the monarchy was in a disarray because Vladimir slept around and left too many legitimate and illegitimate heirs. The fallout led to the fracturing of the entire state and squabbles between the heirs for a bigger chunk of the pie. Which later, in the 13th century, made it easier for the Mongols to invade.
Granted.... they didn't have nuclear weapons, cyber-attacks, and the internet. But... they had their fair share of challenges that are hard for us to judge, since this was a very long time ago. That said, I am pretty sure people who lived in those countries in those days were also dismayed and uncertain how this was all going to turn out. Still working on it...

John/Bring It, I suggest we need a documentary on both Mussolini and Hitler. The documentary has to contrast the tiny contrasts between Trump and the two Fascist leaders. More important, it has to emphasize the significant similarities between Trump's regime and theirs. One of our hopes has to be effective education about the past and the present. Trump's strategy is pretty obvious to anyone familiar with history.
So many do not understand the differences between fascism and communism nor between socialism and communism. We have long lived with governmental assistance in our semi-socialist country (or as some like to call it, democratic socialism), and it's been a good thing that many lower-to-middle-income folks have depended on to survive and even thrive. But not just talking cash aid, food stamps (now SNAP or EBT), school lunches, and Medicaid. Also talking public schools; roads, highways and bridges and other infrastructure maintenance; national and state parks; and public libraries, etc. -- all the perks that our government has shouldered and that we've come to take for granted as part of life in America. And now here we are in a police state -- a.k.a. fascism -- living in fear, seeing neighbors disappear and families torn apart, and scared they'll come for us. Those of us who are poor have been labeled "parasites" and services to us have been cut to give the uber-rich more tax breaks, to the tune of putting the US into further debt by trillions of dollars. Us poor folks may end up in death camps at some point if we're too ill or disabled or old to work. Or we may end up in "angel camps" as slave labor serving the rich and powerful. Yep, The Handmaid's Tale come to Life.

I find a way to stand up and speak out in some way EVERY DAY because my father's paternal s ancestors were HERE at the beginning of the 1600s. They fought in every single war and played a big role in the American Revolution. The rest of those ancestors came as more recent immigrants, escaping poverty, war or persecution. I fight the fight because my religious beliefs teach me to stand up for others, stand up for what is right, and stand against tyranny and evil. As a life-long teacher, I taught every student I ever had to stand up for themselves and provided them with skills to speak out against whatever or whoever assailed them. I stand on the shoulders of those great GIANTS before me, who kept our country going, despite a war against a king, a civil war, slavery, civil rights violations, oppression, and racism. I will not succumb to apathy, and I will NOT give up this fight!

This morning I walked along the beach Thoreau wrote about in the book Cape Cod: “A man may stand there and put all America behind him.” It was hot, the sun brutal, yet I walked the 6mi between the Nauset Light and Marconi Beaches and back. I had Sousa marches and the Battle Hymn of the Republic (lyrics imperfectly remembered) in my head - the pace was difficult to maintain in sand.

Thank you for the reminder, Adam. Most days I feel gutted, overwhelmed and truly fearful for my country and its people - the ones who really do believe in that promise. Alas, it's beyond horrifying to think of how many really don't care for the promise of the country and that it is worth fighting for. I don't know how we can get others to truly engage and to truly care and that's the maddening part in all of this. There are many days I get distracted by everyday stuff like weeding my flower garden, washing windows, babysitting my grandkids, that at the end of the day I realize I haven’t thought about the mess our country currently is in. My husband pointed out to me that what we are going through is normal for a young country. Times are different that when most of our allies were fighting and going through growing pains. There are no feudal lords or serfdoms officially (interesting how our current situation is similar but that is another discussion), but we are at an inflection point of our history. Now is when we have the opportunity to take what was good about our country and fight to make it better. If we tune out and don't face what is in front of us we will lose everything we love and actually made America great.
That is very true. At 250 years of age, as a country, US is still a baby. For perspective, when France was 250 - roughly around 1095 - they were into Crusades. It was just becoming a big thing - Holy War and all the consequences.

My native Ukraine - then Kievan Rus at the age of 250 (1130s), was messed up to no end. Following the religious unification by Princess Olga and her grandson - Prince Vladimir, the monarchy was in a disarray because Vladimir slept around and left too many legitimate and illegitimate heirs. The fallout led to the fracturing of the entire state and squabbles between the heirs for a bigger chunk of the pie. Which later, in the 13th century, made it easier for the Mongols to invade.
Granted.... they didn't have nuclear weapons, cyber-attacks, and the internet. But... they had their fair share of challenges that are hard for us to judge, since this was a very long time ago. That said, I am pretty sure people who lived in those countries in those days were also dismayed and uncertain how this was all going to turn out. Still working on it...

So many do not understand the differences between fascism and communism nor between socialism and communism. We have long lived with governmental assistance in our semi-socialist country (or as some like to call it, democratic socialism), and it's been a good thing that many lower-to-middle-income folks have depended on to survive and even thrive. But not just talking cash aid, food stamps (now SNAP or EBT), school lunches, and Medicaid. Also talking public schools; roads, highways and bridges and other infrastructure maintenance; national and state parks; and public libraries, etc. -- all the perks that our government has shouldered and that we've come to take for granted as part of life in America. And now here we are in a police state -- a.k.a. fascism -- living in fear, seeing neighbors disappear and families torn apart, and scared they'll come for us. Those of us who are poor have been labeled "parasites" and services to us have been cut to give the uber-rich more tax breaks, to the tune of putting the US into further debt by trillions of dollars. Us poor folks may end up in death camps at some point if we're too ill or disabled or old to work. Or we may end up in "angel camps" as slave labor serving the rich and powerful. Yep, The Handmaid's Tale come to Life.

Our Constitution should protect us from a President exactly like Trump. However the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision to give the President immunity from crimes has made Trump move to take over all power. How can any decent human being who has supported the Unitary Executive theory still hold that position given what has happened to our country under Trump? He is literally destroying our democracy, he could care less about the rule of law, and he looks to Orban from Hungary for inspiration. Why are not more people in powerful or significant positions fighting back? Why focus on the midterms? They are more than a year away. The damage he could do between now and then is frightening to contemplate. I realize that it has taken many years to get Civil Rights, Women’s rights, disabled rights. BUT, our country has never been close to having an autocratic President, nor has there been so much distain for the rule of law. Underneath everything that is happening is White Supremacy. Why I rise...I do it for my children, my grandchildren, and the future of America's children.
I find a way to stand up and speak out in some way EVERY DAY because my father's paternal s ancestors were HERE at the beginning of the 1600s. They fought in every single war and played a big role in the American Revolution. The rest of those ancestors came as more recent immigrants, escaping poverty, war or persecution. I fight the fight because my religious beliefs teach me to stand up for others, stand up for what is right, and stand against tyranny and evil. As a life-long teacher, I taught every student I ever had to stand up for themselves and provided them with skills to speak out against whatever or whoever assailed them. I stand on the shoulders of those great GIANTS before me, who kept our country going, despite a war against a king, a civil war, slavery, civil rights violations, oppression, and racism. I will not succumb to apathy, and I will NOT give up this fight!

I salute Adam for realizing he cannot just go live off the grid and hide in the woods. He looks at his son and realizes he must do what he does for his son's sake. You do what you must do because of your faith, your ancestors, your students. So must we all, whether for parents, ancestors, children, faith, decency, a commitment to justice, our study of history.
As a sign on No Kings Day said so well: "We fought a king in 1775. We defeated a dictator in 1945. We will overcome whatever the hell this is in 2025!"

This morning I walked along the beach Thoreau wrote about in the book Cape Cod: “A man may stand there and put all America behind him.” It was hot, the sun brutal, yet I walked the 6mi between the Nauset Light and Marconi Beaches and back. I had Sousa marches and the Battle Hymn of the Republic (lyrics imperfectly remembered) in my head - the pace was difficult to maintain in sand.
I did stand, several times, and put America behind me as I took in the crashing waves. This country is far too important to allow it to be desecrated and sullied by he-who-shall-not-be-named and his sociopathic hench-folk.
We cannot give up the fight, no matter how hard or painful it may be.

Thank you for the reminder, Adam. Most days I feel gutted, overwhelmed and truly fearful for my country and its people - the ones who really do believe in that promise. Alas, it's beyond horrifying to think of how many really don't care for the promise of the country and that it is worth fighting for. I vacillate on my feelings of leaving the country or staying and fighting - something I never imagined ever thinking or contemplating! I don't know how we can get others to truly engage and to truly care and that's the maddening part in all of this. I will cling to this message and try harder to be stronger knowing that my family members have fought for the country and even though I can't pick up arms to fight, I can fight in other ways!

There are many days I get distracted by everyday stuff like weeding my flower garden, washing windows, babysitting my grandkids, that at the end of the day I realize I haven’t thought about the mess our country currently is in. I feel a little guilty for not thinking about those who are on the “front lines” of trying to save our democracy. But Adam’s pieces always bring me back to how we are ALL in this together.

I don’t have kids, not by choice, but because I chose 2 different women that ended up having serious issues. But I’m in this fight for those who do have children, like you Adam, because I don’t want them to grow up in a country that we let slide into something we dont want to live in. It’s just sometimes I feel that we should be doing more, what that is, I’m not sure. I will never check out or not fight for what we had just 7 months ago. And for all those with kids, I won’t check out for you or them. But if there is something we can be doing, I just ask that you lead us Adam and let us know. That’s all I ask.
