Trump is dissolving right before our eyes. Should his followers or Oath Keepers or similar militia crap not like it, Joe Biden is still President of the United States and can call out the National Guard or something stronger against them. Trump will be sentenced September 18th so we can look for the felon to do something wild and stupid by then.

AMEN! I just hope that the Supreme Court is not so brazen as to overturn any of the multiple free and fair convictions that are deservedly coming his way! If they do, IMO the Supreme Court should immediately be dissolved and reconstituted to remove ALL political bias from its legal decisions. How to accomplish that is another story.

I can understand Trump supporters to a degree. I think most are hard working people who see the American dream slipping away. While economy is booming fewer and fewer benefit. Years of “trickle down” has been a disaster. Owning your own home has become almost out of reach for first time buyers. Private pensions are a thing of the past and people resign themselves to working until they die. Corporate greed has pushed everything past normal supply and demand prices. All this while a small percentage of those at the top control more and more of the wealth a trend exacerbated by an unfair tax structure. Trump (well healed freeloader that he is) comes along and tells them, “look over there at all these immigrants and lawbreakers, they are the problem” when it’s really people like him. Angry people listen to that message especially when they’re told by government that everything is great but everyday experience tells them otherwise. The economy must be brought back into balance by expanding the middle class. An equitable tax structure is essential. Closer scrutiny of profiteering by corporations and breaking up monopolies is a must. The resurgence of labor unions to regain equitable salary and benefits is essential. Trump is for Trump.

Harris/Walz in November

Expand full comment

Regarding profiteering by Corporations: How about encouraging Corporations to increase employee compensation by giving them tax deductions for doing so, with a focus on improving compensation for their lowest paid workers? Also tax deductions for keeping their profit margin below a reasonable limit (as defined by people who have more expertise in Corporate finance than I do)?

Expand full comment

Your ideas would require strict regulation to ensure adherence because corporate America pursues profitability first. Large corporations have benefited from favorable tax laws for years and continue to lobby for even more tax shelters, yet they have repeatedly fallen short when it comes to responsible behavior. During Covid the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) was designed to keep workers employed but considerable amounts of PPP money was used to maintain profitability. Low interest rates resulting from quantitative easing was supposed to stimulate the economy, but many corporations used to cheap money to buy back stock or take on exorbitant amounts of debt. Large corporations don’t think the way they did 50 years ago. A good read on this is, “The Man Who Broke Capitalism” by David Gelles (NYT). It deals with GE’s CEO Jack Welsh and his lasting influence on corporate management philosophy namely, profit above all else. The best most current example, Boeing in which 3 of the last four CEOs came from GE including David Calhoun

Expand full comment

I understand that these ideas would likely require Federal Government oversight.

I am also open to other suggestions.

IMO raising the minimum wage is a fallacy because the Corporations simply raise the price of their products and services by an equal (or greater) amount which results in inflation. The same can be said for Corporate taxes. The Corporations simply pass them to the Consumer in price increases, again fueling inflation. Also, Corporate profit margins in a Free Market system should be unregulated, as they are, but we can provide incentives to the Corporations to set and maintain profit margins that are reasonable.

The idea of incentives for desired behavior is already implemented in Personal Tax Law. Why not provide incentives to Corporations in order to promote desired behavior?

We need to develop new ideas to incentivise Corporations to "play fair" and not simply pass the costs on to Consumers. I presented a couple of mine but others might (probably) have better ones. If we don't offer suggestions and discuss mutually acceptable negotiated solutions, nothing will ever get better.

I agree with you Richard. We have some brilliant minds in America. Why couldn’t we come up with some equitable ways for corporations to be profitable and not take consumers “to the cleaners”.

Sounds more reasonable than what is presently being done, which is huge tax breaks for those who don’t need them and instead make middle class (what’s left of them) and the poor make up the difference. Trickle down economics does not work because the those at the top plug up the tickle so it all stays with them.
