I agree with you 100%. And I am one of those Democrats who believes we need to make common cause with those who will stand up for Democracy. This needs to be our priorities other things need to be put off for calmer times. I have long wondered about who goes into politics. Do they really believe in what they are saying or is that just their path to power and influence. Do they have public policies that they wish to advance or are they only interested in advancing themselves. I think the novelist Frank Herbert nailed it, having one of his characters say: its not that power corrupts but power attracts the corruptible.

Its great until, its not. When its not you have to look in the mirror. This path ends for everyone, how do you want to be remembered

I keep thinking about Lincoln's 1st run for the US Senate seat. In those days the state senate elected senators. On the first ballot he was a few votes shy of winning. It went 10 ballots and in the end he directed his supporters to vote for a Democrat who shared his opposition to the expansion of slavery into the territories. This must have been hard and bitter fruit. This Democrat was elected even though he only had a few votes on the 1st ballot.

Well said , Mr. K. Stay angry, stay vocal. Your voice of sanity is so important right now. You are so right. I am a life long believer in the Democratic philosophy, but I am more strongly devoted to our country and the Constitution.

Have a beautiful Sunday.

Thanks to your dad! Mine was a B17 pilot in the Pacific. Ditto to never speaking much about it. But he did talk about having started a dance band on base!

I extend my gratitude to your father for his service and to his family for the sacrifices that had to be made.

My dad was an officer the Navy on a fighter ship with a smoke screen around the ship. He had partial hearing loss from the cannons I believe. This was during WWII. He was proud to serve his country.

Although his strabismus had held him back, Henry Ford provided him an eye operation at Henry Ford Hospital when he was on tour with his college glee club from PA. It changed his life. He met my mother when he was docked in Palm Beach, Fla..

If those who are so anticonstitution fought against dictatorship in WWII, giving up so much, they wouldn’t think January 6th was anything but what it was, a horrifying, disgusting insurrection at the encouragement and direction of a horrifying, disgusting, disgraceful COWARD who thinks people who fight for their country and get killed or wounded are stupid. HE is the COWARD, he is the LOSER. And he will lose again because he will be in prison for his crimes. And that will be the best thing he will have done for this country. Justice.

Congratulations to you for your father's service. Mine was in supply trying to keep up with Patton's Third Army. They were moving so fast they ran off the maps My father ended up ahead of the front on at least two occasions but made it back to have a family. I can only imagine what he would have thought of Trump and it isn't pretty.

Thank you for being one of the voices of sanity. If a civil war ensues or Trump tries a second coup attempt, I hope that the voices of sanity prevail and neither of the above last long. I lived through the 1950s, 60s, and 70s when there was great upheaval but also great economic growth that benefited all people. I hope to live to see a government united in moving America forward for all people.

Many of the things you spoke about can make one's blood boil. That can serve to make us even stronger and not give up the fight. There can be energy in that, if one channels it that way.

Your final paragraph reminds me of when Liz Cheney appeared on Rachel Maddow's MSNBC show. They agreed that they are on complete opposite ends of the political spectrum -- yet there would (hopefully) be time to discuss and argue (civilly) their opposing opinions in the future. But for now, there is a much greater cause of which they are on the same side... preserving democracy.

Expand full comment

Yes, if Trump becomes president again, the forum to discuss and argue will disappear. It will be his way or the highway.

We must keep up the pressure on the “stupid” words and ideas (so far from reality) coming from the maga cult and tfg. I’m sitting here watching Meet The Press and Elise Stefanie spewing outrageous lies and “crap” that is so unbelievable that I can barely stomach it. I know Adam, it was hard but necessary for the safety of your family to move to Texas, where you have family. It’s not lost on me that your new state is home to some of the ridiculous speech and actions by the governor and congressman like Cruz et al. I believe you are uniquely positioned to there for a reason. Also, saw Luz on Face the Nation and was refreshing to hear common sense and truth be spoken. I’m with you and whoever else, Republican or Democrat, who can bring back sanity. You are not alone.

Yes, bring back sanity! I'm old but not frail and I will fight with my last ounce of passion for the beauty of this multi-national country of mainly immigrants. We still are a great nation and full of hope and promise!

I am over the anger now and am focused like a laser beam. Trump builds his support by promoting anger and fear. I suggest that those of us who want to preserve our constitutional form of government get more determined, more strategic, more mutually supportive, and more committed than ever. But I am past allowing Trump or his MAGA cultists of robbing me of my joy, my hopefulness, my confidence in Biden, my being inspired by the courageous, my being uplifted by ideals. Let's happily take on this challenge. Let's know we can conquer this minority that uses hateful language and incites violence. Let's stand more united than ever and demonstrate to the world that WE care about democracy, human rights, fairness, and compassion. Let's combine courage and inspiration and hope to demonstrate that the promotion of hatred does not end well for those who espouse it.

Thank you, Adam, for standing up for what is right. I wish more would have that courage.

Yesterday, I was angry. Today, I am sad. Every time that someone tells me "thank you for your service", I remind them that it goes both says. Our service is meaningless without good people to defend. And lately, I remind them that all those Russians giving up their lives in Putin's war on ukraine are wasted. They are not defending anyone. They are serving the will of their master to murder good people and take their land and lives from them.

So I am sad today, because I question myself about the good people left in the USA. My family served, and many died in uniform. I survived, but I came home crippled with seizures and a lot of metal holding me together. Where is the value in those lost lives today? Where are the good people that were worth giving our lives for?

It hurts, Adam. It hurts in the core of who I am. This should never happen to us. And it is all because of one man, who sat in the highest position of our government. A man who ridiculed our sacrifice. No wonder recruiting is down, and the number of those getting out early are climbing. What are we fighting for? Giving our lives, our bodies, and our hearts for?

Tomorrow, I will be back in the fight and pushing back against this abomination that is trying to destroy our nation. Like my grandfather, I will never give up. Today, I am just applying bandages over the wounds Trump and his cowards have caused.
