Great speech as that is the speech that MAGA should hear. I am a baby boomer born in 1951 but I was aware of politics enough to distrust Dick Nixon and see danger signs in his actions. Living through the upheaval of the 60s taught me that Freedom is a continuous battle. I saw America's economic growth turned off by Reagan. America would become a service economy? Sorry, America solves problems with manufacturing. The GOP policy of giving everything to the rich and big business put an end to the middle class and most of the opportunities for regular people. Know why people shoot each other or kill themselves with opiates? Can't get a job, can't make a decent living.

The Republicans keep producing tax cuts for the rich and nothing for the American people. Russia continues to undermine Democracy through them. They were elected by the American people. Now they do all they can to punish the American people.

I’m a 1950 model so right there with you. I lived through and agree with everything you said.

Expand full comment

I’m a 1951 model and can say that you are spot on with your historical account of the 60s, Reagan’s trickle down economics didn’t really work. The richer got way richer, and the middle class was a mere reflection of it’s former self.

Expand full comment

Agreed, I think that was also because of the trade deals/outsourcing. Big corps replacing mom & pop stores, lots of manufacturing jobs going to China.

Why can't we have a party that helps the middle class? Left only seems to help the poor; right the rich. Meantime middle class is paying for everything. I think people are rightly upset when their hard-earned tax dollars go to handouts that are not even needed or don't go to the right place (and that they have no say in). Or wasteful gov projects that take millions and never even get off the ground.

Expand full comment

It infuriates me to know all the theft of millions of dollars of Covid money that was supposed to help people who truly needed it but instead was scammed by those who didn’t need it. That is just one example. There is so much lacking in oversight regarding our tax dollars (and of course no legislator or government department is being held accountable) and outright bungling of money management in Congress. Is the job just too hard for them?

Expand full comment

Yes! So much this! Here in CA almost no oversight of their seemingly never-ending thirst for spending hard-earned tax dollars. Lucky for you guys I don't have much time, otherwise I'd go on for hours about this. 😀

That's the thing that shocks me the most. The RepUblIcan love of Russia. Just because the Soviet Union broke up didn't change politics in Russia. Putin was a top KGB agent and now rules Russia. His goal is to recapture Eastern Europe and then attack NATO. Trump said if he's president, he'll let Putin have free rein. This cannot happen.

Expand full comment

If Putin attacks a NATO Country Donny Boy will try to ignore article 5.

He has said that the countries are not paying their dues. (nonsense statement tailor made for Donny's Dummies)

This is just his way of getting ready to stiff them, just like the hundreds of building contractors he has stiffed.

Expand full comment

Absolutely right. My good friend worked in the NYC buildings dept and contractors were constantly complaining because Trump refused to pay on the full contract when the building was finished. When he complained, he just said, "sue me", which they couldn't. That's why he eventually had to go to Russian contractors.

Expand full comment

Donny Boy lives for M&Ms, not the candy. He lives for Money and Malice. He is either trying to get Money or committing Malice. Stiffing contractors lets him do both (his win-win situation).

He is such a flawed person. I don't understand how everyone can't see that.

Expand full comment

Maybe his followers are just as flawed.

Expand full comment

I think that privately most know that he is a flawed individual but don't dare say so in public. The bottom line is: he may be flawed but he'll give us (large corporations and the wealthy) another big tax cut, and the religious right access to power.

Thank you for your courage in standing up to Trump. I've been wanting to respond for a while now, so I finally signed up. This should never have been a binary choice. The reason Trump was able to hijack the Republican party was that eventually everyone in the party feels like they have to rally behind the frontrunner. In a multiparty system like in Europe, Trump would have never been able to capture one of the major parties - he would be with the populist far right. I'm afraid the US will be locked in this two-party system for a while because the first party that splits, loses. I hope we will find a way out eventually.

Yes Adam this is unsustainable. But when is the reckoning? Feeling utterly hopeless here in AZ—the land of your “buddy” David Schweikert & Kari Lake. Everyone screaming about our new abortion law from 1864. The reality is it FEELS like 1864 in this state. White Republican men making laws for women. Pathetic, frightening, and dangerous. I will be putting money into Ruben Gallego’s campaign and praying for our state and our country. I am/was a Republican. Again I ask you, what do those of us sane people do? Where do we go? Never in my life did think I would be praying for a Democratic House & Senate. But to right the ship is there any other course of action?

Women vote. We can't let them take away a right, even if it's a right we will never use. That is the path to no rights at all.

For right now, there is no choice. I hope that people like Adam and Liz inspire the formatiin of a centrist Party. But the formation of the Party has to come first, not a candidate.

As a boomer of 1951, I have seen the many changes our country has gone through. I always felt we were moving forward, and looked toward the 21st century and progress as a society. I could never imagine that the GOP would take such a drastic turn toward conspiracies and MTG type government leaders. I know there are good Republicans out there, but at this point, I have little respect for them as the continue to bow down to the likes of Trump. And the few that don't get voted out. Those voted out have continued to fight the good fight. I have read some of the Project 2025 document. It is scary. The organizations that put this project in place are powerful, and they will overrun Trump and make sure that all they say will come true.

I live in Texas which is really a no vote state which allows for the GOP to control the state. Being a Texan was something that I used to be proud of, but that is no longer the case. I have actively joined the Democratic Party in Comal and am taking a more aggressive stand in the politics of the county. It is not just Trump that has to be defeated, it is the down ballot as well, the justice systems, and the local governments that we need to make sure will represent the people and not their pockets.

I very much like this post. I hope that as time moves toward November, that people wake the heck up and realize that it is going to take all of us to make sure we come out on the other side as the country we all know and love.

Adam, Always love your analogies! Beautifully written but so sad!. I hope you understand, YOU are one of the first lemmings and RINOs! You were on the white horse but no lemming was brave enough to follow. You will be on that white horse again and I believe there are many right now wishing they were as brave when you were! They will look to you for how you "survived" even when you were so alone. However, you weren't. Thanks to your Faith, you seem to have flourished(?!?) and will once again lead! I think you should know how many out here admire what you have done but aren't comfortable in being vocal. Thank you and please keep up your leadership!!

What I don't understand is that Trump knew he lost the election before Jan 6. He was told by his own Justice Dept, all secretary of states, his top cybersecurity experts, and a data analytics team he hired himself to find fraud (read "Disproven" by Ken Block). He nevertheless went through with it, endangering his own VP and Congress and refusing to call for National Guard backup when he saw things get out of hand.

I realize it's a tough call whom to believe on election fraud; all top Republican officials who wanted Trump to win, or the guy who desperately wanted to stay in power, kisses up to dictators, fires competent people by tweet, lies about his crowd size, calls himself 'better than Lincoln, better than Washington', rage tweets in all caps and calls everybody dogs & pigs.

Btw the only reason Trump didn't fire his Attorney General for telling him the truth was that people like Richard Donoghue said the whole dept would resign if he did. Trump did fire Chris Krebs, head of Cybersecurity, for notifying him the election wasn't stolen. These are dictator moves, as is telling the Dept of Justice to pressure state officials to change the outcome of an election based on a lie. It is mindboggling to me that Trump has still not been held accountable for any of it; it also makes us look bad on the world stage.

Thank you so much Adam for continuing to speak the truth. I left the Republican Party in 2008, became an Activist and have never looked back. I admired you so much during the J6 hearings and was thrilled to find you on Substack. Keep up the great work!!

My family is torn apart by Trump and 95% are Voting for him. It breaks my heart. I found this beautiful song called "Broken Truth" a fellow Substacker posted. It says it all about what this horrible man has done to all of us and the country. Spread the word. 💙🇺🇸

Overheard by a server at the Billionaire's Club Trump fund raiser. Trump talking to a group of rich donors with drinks in their hands.

"So, Mr President, what do you really think about your MAGA supporters?"

"I love my MAGAs! Especially the guys. The women are unattractive. Not my type! At the last rally there were a lot of 3s and 4's and 5's. Disgusting old biddies. Who wants to bed that? Now the guys. They are great. For a bunch of blue collar factory workers with middle school educations. I love my undereducated MAGAs! The guys will show up with AR-15s when I ask. They're great!"

"But Mr President, the MAGA women love you!"

"Yah, I appreciate them turning out. But did you get a look at them? Most of them remind me of Marge Green. Glad to have their support, but stay away from me!"

I hate to say it but that quote doesn't sound like Trump. The sentences are too well formed and it uses words that I don't think are in his vocabulary, like middle school or undereducated. He might have expressed similar sentiments at the fundraiser but I doubt that he is capable of saying what is quoted here.

Baby boomer, circa 1945. I was encouraged when I read yesterday, our Congressman Chuck Edwards visited Ukraine, and has come out publically, in favor of continuing to provide arms for them. We will see if he actually has a backbone and votes for it. It is hard being a Democrat in NC. I immediately sent him an e-mail, thanking him and encouraging him to do the right thing.

I blame Mitch mcConnell for this. He could have rallied his party to vote for impeachment. Instead he said, "let the courts take care of it". So here we are. Of course now that Trump's the frontrunner, it will be that much harder to hold him accountable.
