What I like about your policy proposals-- they’re tied to the idea of accountability. I think both our parties are too much in the habit of selling solutions that let their own party off the hook and make their constituents feel good.

Policy shouldn’t be chosen the same way we choose entertainment, and politicians that pander to people wanting that have wrecked our country.

Thank you Adam. You continue to make sense and provide solid information. Trump and his clone clowns are becoming more and more like Russians. How many have been compromised? Are they forced to go along with these insane ideas for fear of their lives and the lives of their families? Or have I been reading too many novels? Invading Mexico would be a mirror image of Ukraine with the exception that no one claims Mexico is part of the US. Maybe Mexico would like to take Texas back. It is all so very crazy. Unfortunately most people lead their daily lives without going too deeply into what is happening nationally and throughout the world. Foxland is believed to be real. Talking heads fill the air with their disinformation. I've tried to persuade people close to me to better inform themselves with limited results. Perhaps you should team up with Professor Heather Cox Richardson who has gathered thousands of us through her "Letters from an American" and frequent FB live discussions of politics with a strong historical background. The two of you would make a strong combination.

The use of fire power in Hollywood movies has become repulsive to me. So much of it is just the idea that the good guys have the exact ability to kill/hurt evil people without any collateral damage to the innocent. It’s the fantasy world of vengeance, that has become entertainment & really doesn’t happen in reality. It spurs the 2nd amendment crazies to believe that more gun violence is always the answer to problems.

Great article thank you. I had no idea about the actions in Columbia, nor the success that came of it. Seems like that program would have gotten a little more press in an ideal world. Maybe I just missed it though.

Adam, It's really time for the quiet majority to take a stand, speak out, and vote! Violence only begets more violence and insane behavior and speech more of the same. We need a spiritual and moral revolution in this country NOW. You and all of us are starting it and we've got to keep spreading it.

Thanks for a fascinating article. I had no idea all that was going on with Colombia at the time. (I have a feeling that many others didn’t either). Of course all we hear now are quips from some of the Presidential candidates about how the drug problem will be solved by “Their Plan” to engage the US Military. They make it sound so simple and foolproof. Thanks for setting the record straight, based on your firsthand experience.

This is the country we will face if people don’t wake up. Aligning with Russia against NATO is only one of the many real possibilities that exist. I struggle with my Republican Party registration every day. John McCain is banging on the lid of his coffin to get out. Very sad this is what has happened.

You're a voice of reason in the Republican insane asylum. Thank you.

Reason, truth and reality do not reside in Trump’s brain.

Ps: Colombia not Columbia.

I didn't want to be the one to point out your PS as well. (LOL)

Having served in the Army in Korea, I recognize the Demilitarized Zone there as being highly effective at preventing North Korean incursions into the Republic of Korea. The situation on the U.S. border is similar, and calls for a much more vigorous response involving both physical barriers and supplementation of the Border Patrol with active duty military personnel trained in non-lethal apprehension of invaders. This would be consistent with maintaining the combat readiness of personnel stationed in the U.S., and would particularly address the problem of the tens or hundreds of thousands of "getaways," which presumably include some of the most dangerous drug criminals. Getting serious about the problem does not require an invasion of Mexico, not would it preclude the type of cooperation with authorities in Mexico advocated by Mr. Kinzinger.

A comment regarding people who claim their right under the 2nd Amendment to own practically any type of "arms" to protect themselves. As most of them know, a shotgun would be the best type of weapon for home defense for anybody other than somebody dealing drugs or otherwise at risk of a gang style attack.

As I have learned in online discussions, many NRA types want to arm themselves with AR-15 rifles and similar weapons as a defense against tyranny by the "guvmint." I used to regard that as irrational, until the Marxists throughout the U.S. turned to activism under the "woke" movement, abetted to a large extent by the Biden administration. If that pushes the right wingers too far, it is not impossible that they could use those guns of theirs to forcibly put a stop to left wing extremism. Centrists had better wake up to that possibility and reject extremist candidates of both varieties.

Bearing in mind the misogyny at the heart of many Republican policies, do you think that the prospect of Mexico having a female president might be encouraging some of this talk of invasion?

My suspicion is that the Rs don’t even know about that.
