Donald's mental decline is real, and its contagious

We need to have a conversation as a country. It’s staring us right in the face, whether we want to admit it or not. It gets worse every day. Donald is clearly in mental decline and his ramblings, and desperate need for applause, is part of the evidence. We are becoming numb to the insanity, and that is the problem.

Just this week, Donald invited Russia to attack NATO for not paying it’s fair share, which shows he has no understanding of how NATO actually works, and the benefits the US has gotten in spades from the alliance. There has been no massive war in Europe because NATO strikes the fear of God into Russia, and the only time article 5 (an attack on one is an attack on all) was invoked, was after 9/11 and resulted in an over 20 year commitment from our allies to defeat terror in Afghanistan. But he doesn’t care…whether it’s pure ignorance or pure malice, it really doesn’t matter. What is worse, however, is watching people like Marco Rubio on CNN’s State of the Union, collapse into a heap of humiliated “yes sir’ing” of the former President. In fact, as of this writing, I couldn’t find a single sitting Republican that openly opposed what he said.

Then, in what is not even surprising in the least, he went off on Taylor Swift, claiming in his lizard brain that he is responsible for her success because of some law, and seemed to threaten her against endorsing Joe Biden. The whole Taylor Swift thing has become quite amazing, the fear the MAGAs show is real and deep. In fact if you look at just about any outrage of the day generated by the right, behind it lies the fear of helplessness. They are, in fact, weak, and know it.

As if right on cue, the mad loser decided to attack, yes, a military man deployed in a conflict zone. Nikki Haley’s husband, Michael, a major in the National Guard, is currently deployed defending our country in a very tense time. The man who never served anyone or anything but himself, feeling once again small and meager, decided to attack him for not being present on the campaign trail. Well, that happens when you are deployed around the globe on active duty, you have the difficulty of distance, and the prohibition on campaigning. Of course this is a pattern with Don, he feels the most threatened by men and women better than him.

What bothered me most about that attack wasn’t the ramblings of a man with no moral center, but the cheers that followed. As Donald spit his rage, the brain worms spread into the audience and chewed and chewed. Their logic was gone, all that was left was the cheap dopamine hits that surged forward because now everyone was laughing together, belonging, to the same deranged club together. In fact, that is all MAGA is. A cult that gives people a feeling of belonging, no matter what issue or outrage, there is a family. Safe in a cocoon of insanity, but safe nonetheless.

Much has been made of the special counsel’s report about Joe Biden, and let’s be honest, it wasn’t good from a political narrative. But on the other side of the political equation is a man who is losing his memory, his grip on reality, his strength, and any self-confidence he may or may not have ever had. He knows the walls are closing in, and he is trembling. He knows he went too far, and instead of helping to right the ship, he is lighting fires because “If I’m going down, the whole ship is.” What’s worse, however, is that half of the people on the ship are helping him, because after all, they fear excommunication from the safety of the tribe more than death itself. Lindsay Graham, Rubio, the cheering throngs at MAGA rallies, the dopamine flows and cortisol chews away, but it feels REALLY GOOD.

The truth is, the cult will not be broken before November. There maybe some stragglers that see the truth, and walk away. Sadly there will be a few that see the darkness and wander in. But the good news is that there are more of us than them. They are louder, they feed on the chaos, but they are wildly outnumbered. The danger isn’t from the hard core, it’s from those on the outside peeking in flirting with giving the cult another chance. A “lesser of two evils” decision. It is essential that we not give up this fight or feel overly discouraged. We can and will win if we keep battling. Man your foxhole, don’t let the dark thoughts past you.

If we hold until November, keep our unsteady alliance strong, some in the cult will look around at the carnage and empty shots of kool-aid, and come to their senses. My prayer is that this whole moment will be seen as the launching point for a new American century. It’s darkest before the dawn.
