I have been a Republican since 1979 but haven’t voted for their presidential candidates since GHW Bush.
I find it hard to understand why anyone has undying loyalty to a party rather than consulting their brain about what is good for them as an American. I am a conservative because I believe in building on proven, or at least very carefully thought out, ideas. I feel that the Democrats can get out over their skis in their enthusiasm for new programs (which is why I’m not a Democrat). And I couldn’t vote in primaries in my state if I were an Independent. The wealthy people I know vote Republican because they think that’s good for the economy. Actually the worst recession of my lifetime occurred at the end of eight years of George W Bush in office. Ever since Reagan the economy has been tilted in favor of the stock market, which is one of the reasons for our (I believe unhealthy) enormous wealth gap. I derive all my old age income from stocks but I believe Biden’s approach of building from the bottom up and the middle out is the healthiest balance for our country. I wish we could all stop being so tribal, defensive and knee jerk critical. All that stuff just causes brain fog. I think that if I choose what I see to be good for America I will be choosing what is good for me since I am, first of all, an American.

I think most people understand this but what many are not clear about is that starting with Regan’s presidency the investor class was seen as the most important group in our economy. Consequently emphasis was put on return on investment thru dividends and appreciation. Trickle down economics
in many ways encouraged wealth to flow to the top by Republican policies that favored business and the stock market. So, on top of tax aversion, the wealthy like where we’ve been going for the last 60 years or so.
Personally my problem with this is that I feel it has caused a social imbalance that is very volatile without people understanding the political and economic undercurrents that affect them.
