We are being steamrolled. Spineless Republicans stand aside while our laws and Constitution are dismantled. Republican senators have allowed a slate of the most unqualified Cabinet nominees to be confirmed. There is no coming back from this!

It’s been a pathetic morality play to witness Mitch McConnell voting No on Cabinet nominations. Too little too late, as he obviously knows his end is near and apparently is suddenly aware of his legacy in destroying the country. Wow.

Totally agree. Mitch, I believe, has always known that his inaction around the second impeachment showed his cowardice and that nothing he’s done or not done since then can make up for that nor negate his terrible decisions in any way.

Trump and Musk Are Going to War Against Military Veterans. Their executive order seeks to impose severe hiring restrictions and would disproportionately harm veterans, who make up one-third of the federal workforce at the VA. For all veterans that voted for Trump, congratulations!

But the military just loves Trump! Vomitous. That’s just it—we need a military as well as a police force that will actually defy this coup and remember their oath is to THE CONSTITUTION. It’s the very first sentence of the Oath of Enlistment for cryin’ out loud.

This is only 3 weeks into this administration. We are in uncharted territory and the "what can be done’s?” are a joke. They are saying “screw the Constitution!” so we need to do what needs to be done. Protests aren’t doing s*it. These spineless Republicans disgust me in their cowardice. I'm sorry, but even though I'm so glad for all that is being said, we need to do some reflection at this time as we ready for the fight. I cannot forgive the actors who had the power to change the course of history for taking the easy road. Never will I forgive them, but where we are did not happened overnight. It was almost predictable. We were distracted. We looked away. We indulged in hate and threw logs on the fire of divisiveness, and we did not hold the media accountable. We bought their products and stared at our blue screens. We were not alarmed but entertained. Today we are alarmed. Don't be afraid, however, for our enemies are cowards and not as strong as us when we join forces. An old adage still rings true that united we stand. We can do it because it is in our DNA. I can literally feel my spine stiffen like steel. It is within us to take them on together. Trump fears us and is obsessively using chaos and threats and crime to get us to bow to him. He is a frightened coward and the thought of us rising keeps him up at night posting on his social media. You my friend and the thought of your strength when united with all of us keeps him up at night.

Expand full comment

I, too, am glad for all of the things being said. I wonder whether there are groups forming that actually will try to understand the problem and develop strategies to do something. So far, everybody is yelling, "Fire! Fire!, but I haven't yet seen any evidence that the key movers are getting together to figure out what to do. Maybe it's still too early for that. But it needs to happen. I believe that at least the key potential leaders, like Adam, need to be talking with each other to try to understand the problem and start talking about possible ways to do something about it.

Having said that, I'd like to point out that so far, Trump's approval ratings have been going up. As long as the voting populace favors what he is doing, I think there is little hope. So the question is, can the populace be made to see and understand where this is all leading? I'm not sure that's possible at this point. In the time following Hitler's rise to power in January 1933, his popularity ratings did nothing but go up. I think the same thing is happening to us now. There may be a "natural" time frame it takes for the people to see what's going on. Maybe we can help speed it up. If not, maybe we're doomed to suffer a fate similar to that of Germany in 1945.

Expand full comment

Never thought of it that way; that we are now Germany, and citizens are forming sides and the "enemy within" is being identified by those who are innocent of any crime. Then we will have WWIII and perhaps the allies once again will join together to push back on the fascists in power. And maybe our land will be the battle ground. It is true we hear nothing from Democrats. Or the media is not covering them. I think even they are waiting on us to rise because they are hog tied. I have no idea. But certainly, war is something we should avoid. We are all exhausted and it has only been what 3 weeks. And we are angry. How dare they! And, why?

Fortunately as Kinzinger mentioned today, many countries are getting ready to boycott us and many Canadians have already begun. I hate to see our economy falter, or people suffer needlessly but a bad economy will get the attention of Trump enablers who the spinless Senators may actually listen to since they are the big donors.

Vindman suggested yesterday, that it is possible that Europe and Ukraine may go around Trump and not be willing to be "sold out." Russia is not as powerful as some think. They are simply scarry because they are fairly immoral in their dealings, bombing civilians and poisoning dissidents, etc. But in reality, their economy is much smaller than the state of CA and they are weakened by the lengthy war.

China will only help Russia so long as it serves their own interest, and come to think of it, making Trump look weak by letting Russia faulter and lose ground without the help from the USA would do just that.

I can tell you that Canadians are furious and not buying anything made in the US has become almost a patriotic duty. So, yes, at some point, I think people will start feeling it and the Regime will somehow try to blame Biden - but when it starts hurting them financially, they may sit up and take notice? I do hope that the marching and protests start soon. I know the mainstream media seems to go out of its way not to cover anything for fear of upsetting the Dear Leader, but when there are enough people on the streets, they may not be bale to hide it so well.

And I very much hope Mr. Vindman is right - and that Europe backs Ukraine, and they won't collapse. Making a "deal" with Putin isn't worth the paper its written on. As soon as Putin has "rested", he will be back for more, exactly as he did after taking Crimea. But to see Trump on his knees and abiding by Putin's wishes is sickening. Russia's economy is in a very bad state; hopefully, it will get much worse.

Expand full comment

The reason protests have not yet started in large scale is because deep down we know there is more than one reason that Trump is involving the military in domestic deportations and internally, and why his deportation focus has been in large blue cities.

At some point, I think he hopes to do what his advisors told him he could not do in term 1, and that was to shoot peaceful protestors and use the military against his own people.

He will likely use the amplifier on FOX News to make it look like all chaos has broken loose with any protest (as they zoom in to make protests look bigger and put them on a 24 hr loop (like they did after Floyd), but this time as an excuse to declare martial law.

The best way to get pressure on is to have his, and the GOP's wealthy donors, feel the pain as they also take a hit to their pocketbooks. So, boycotts.

Sadly, this also means hardship for millions of Americans, but a temp hardship is far better than living under the permanent thumb of an autocracy (where there tends to be economic hardships there, as well, since businesses and other nations will not want conduct business under and unpredictable autocrat as we see in Russia who has a fairly small economy compared to its overall size).

Businesses and trading partners who can go elsewhere, will, with Trump's unpredictable tariffs and lack of regard for the rule of law.

To undo the damage, congress would have to pass laws to take some executive authority away and restore stability, and they will require a super- supermajority of Dems in the House and Senate to overcome a veto. That is if we ever have another election in the USA,

Expand full comment

I very much hope you will still have elections, but I fear with his minions and the Project 2025 people firmly installed and Musk accessing all the computer systems which includes voting, they may already be ensuring that the Dems don't take back any power. Hopefully that's just me being cynical.

Expand full comment

Fortunately, our voting machines are not hooked up to the internet.

Trump seems to not be able to accept this, or that there was no evidence for “stop the steal.”

Thus, when he claimed Musk, was the cause of his win, he simply either wanted to believe this, or he wanted to pretend for his base that the Dems were thwarted from stealing the election, by Musk to keep the lie going.

More likely, Trump will find a way to stop elections (some emergency) or with the help of red state legislatures not certify the election in 2028 (and he will find a way to run for term 3), or have fake slates of electors, like he tried to do in 2020 and have Vance do what Pence would not and throw out the will of the people, and Vance has said he would do so.

Thus, the midterms need to be massive for Dems as well as state and local elections in order to stop option 2.

We have to find a way to break though the wall of right wing propaganda, and I think people will wake up and notice (and be receptive to facts) when they really can’t afford to buy stuff and start losing jobs.

This is unfortunate that it might have to come to this.

Expand full comment

Oh, thank you for clarifying, I was under the impression that they would have a way to get into the voting machines - thrilled t hear that they can't. I agree, The project 2025 boys will find a way to stage an "emergency" that will be of their own making but will be blamed on "the others" ( pretty sure these boys are well versed in Hitler's antics at the Reichstag and beyond) and then impose martial law. Funny thing is, if I remember correctly, that's what got the South Korean leader impeached.

I agree, Vance, Hegseth, Bannon - all of the slimly loyalists will do whatever it take to subjugate the people oft he US. What really turns my stomach is when people like Vance put on their fake "Christian patriot" mantle - when the Pope tells you you're full of it, I think it's time to acknowledge your bluff's been called and try something else.

I sincerely hope people wake up sooner rather than later so some of this hardship can be prevented.

From many remarks made by Trump, Musk and even Musk's 4 year old, some investigation into the legitimacy of the votes in precincts in PA where Musk is alleged to have fiddled with the voting machines needs to take place. We conceded and gave in to the peaceful transfer of power even when it looked extremely suspicious that all 7 swing states would go for Trump in exactly the right precincts. I'm not a conspiracy theorist and I believe in the strength of our electoral system - BUT - in this case, Musk had unprecedented access and money - and maybe, just maybe there is something there. This is important because if it is not investigated and exposed, the actions being taken now by DOGE can very well mean that the next election in 2026 will be severely compromised by new "unlawful" voting laws and we won't have a chance to win back the Congress - or ever have a free and fair election again. They are working on this right now and it is maybe the most important place for us to keep our focus on.

We have to somehow find someone able and willing to lead the coalition of the sane, be it Democrats or disaffected conservative ex-Republicans like myself. A friend wrote a guest opinion for his local paper and gave me permission to post it for others to adapt:

In a recent letter to constituents entitled “The Amodei Report: Roundup of Presidential Actions”, MAGA Mark Amodei stated that a “90-day pause in foreign assistance fulfills President Trump’s commitment to ensuring responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.”

Amodei goes on to list a “few initiatives” funded through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under President Biden’s watch with which he apparently disagrees, and I quote:

— $2.5 million for electric vehicles for Vietnam

— $2 million for sex changes and “LGBT activism” in Guatemala

— Hundreds of thousands of dollars to a non-profit linked to designated terrorist organizations, even after an Inspector General initiated an investigation

— $47,000 for a “transgender opera” in Colombia

— $32,000 for a “transgender comic book” in Peru

Now, let’s put on our Critical Thinking Caps, shall we?

According to the most recent full-year fiscal report for USAID, USAID spent $39 billion dollars on its mission around the world. However, USAID also carries out programs funded by the US State Department. Adding in those expenditures, USAID executed missions totaling between $50 and $60 billion in 2023, according to public reporting. Let’s use $55 billion as an estimate.

Apparently, Mr. Amodei has a gripe with the five programs he mentioned. The approximate total expenditure for these five is about $5.1 million dollars. Dividing $5.1 million dollars by USAID’s total expenditures of $55 billion dollars, we find that Mr. Amodei is apparently complaining about expenditures totaling 0.00927% of USAID’s budget!!!

In other words, Mr. Amodei is literally ignoring the remaining 99.9907% of USAID’s expenditures. One would wonder if he knows or cares what activities are included in 99.9907% of USAID’s activities? Do you, Mark? How about holding one of your very rare constituent town halls so that we can discuss?

A rhetorical point is being made, not a point of substance. In truth, Mr. Amodei’s email to his constituents is not a product of his own independent thinking about USAID, but instead merely a subset of 12 talking points distributed by MAGA, intent upon attacking USAID in districts around the country with the usual “culture war” messages. Fact-checker Glenn Kessler at the Washington Post has declared that 11 of the 12 are wrong: "The White House’s wildly inaccurate claims about USAID spending: Eleven out of 12 claims about the agency’s work are misleading, wrong or lack context.” https://wapo.st/3X2I77c

In truth, USAID performs the vital mission of supporting the U.S. government’s foreign policy by helping countries with economic development, disaster relief, and promoting democracy.

What has USAID accomplished in recent years with the other 99.9907% of the budget that Mr. Amodei didn’t mention?

Well, only saved over 25 million lives in Africa under a program started by President George W. Bush called PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), called by many the most successful humanitarian aid program in history.

What else has USAID done? Daily, USAID saves starving people in sub-Saharan Africa using a substance manufactured from Georgia peanuts, suppresses the production of cocaine in South America, fights to save the Amazon rainforest, and acts through its nearly 100 missions worldwide as a pandemic early-warning system as it provides rudimentary anti-viral health care for the poorest people on earth.

The eradication of smallpox was achieved by a collaboration between USAID and the CDC and the World Health Organization (from which President Trump recently had us withdraw).

The bottom line is that every year, again using the 99.9907% of the budget that Mr. Amodei does not mention, USAID saves millions of lives worldwide, promotes democracy, and promotes American “soft power.”

But don’t just take my word for it, listen to conservative former USAID chief under President G.W. Bush, Andrew Natsios. He says “the notion that the agency are criminals and all that, that’s a lot of garbage. It’s a lie, it’s an insult.” Simply Google "Andrew Natsios USAID", and you will find numerous interviews where Mr. Natsios explains all the good that USAID does, and why America is worse off without it.

It is an abomination that the wealthiest man in the world, Elon Musk, bragged on “X” about how he and his young coders and hackers “spent the weekend feeding USAID into the woodchipper.” The wealthiest man on earth is bragging about an action that will cause thousands and probably millions of deaths of the poorest people on earth, without any review by the U.S. Congress.

This is a sad, disgusting chapter in our country’s history, and Mr. Amodei is complicit, spreading defaming tidbits about USAID while ignoring its magnificent accomplishments for the world and for all Americans. I am disgusted that he apparently condones Mr. Musk’s “feeding USAID through the woodchipper.”

As Mr. Natsios has pointed out, true conservatives don’t feed agencies through the woodchipper, they make course corrections, eliminating the bad and improving on the good works being done. Musk and Trump’s approach is not conservatism… it’s nihilism and anarchy.

I call on Mark Amodei to think for himself, and to stop supporting the ravings of Elon Musk and Donald Trump, before it is too late. American foreign policy and American democracy are at stake. If today’s MAGA will lie about USAID and “feed it through the woodchipper", soon they will come for FEMA, for Medicaid, for Social Security, for Medicare and other programs vital to American citizens to justify the $4.5 trillion dollar tax cut for billionaires that they just proposed in the upcoming budget talks.

Wake up, citizens, before it is too late. As I write this, Donald Trump has abandoned Ukraine, essentially promised disputed territory to Vladimir Putin, and invited this man, a war criminal, to the White House. These are disgraceful moments in American history, and we all need to wake up and think for ourselves.

Especially our elected representatives, like Mark Amodei.

Thank you. That was a master class.

Edit: USAID has a humanitarian mission and I hope everyone can understand that. But it also has a security mission as a by-product. Don't let strife torn areas turn to terror centers or come under the sway of our enemies.

The Democrats are hopelessly bungling this. I wonder if Mitch McConnell loses sleep over where the path he paved is ending. We need a few fearless Republicans to step forward.
