We must realize that half the country agreed to what Trump said he was going to do. Thus, there's no point in blaming anyone other than that part of the electorate. They knew exactly who they were voting for. There's no excuse "well, I was voting against...." No, Trump and Vance, Musk and RFK Jr were all very, very clear with what they planned to do and Harris and Walz, the Obamas and all the others weren't wrong in hammering it home because, now, there is no excuse. We now know what those who voted for Trump wanted or were willing to accept. They voted for that, for a criminal, a sociopath on full display, and we all now have to ride it out. If in two years when all this has been done, there is still a slim majority that says "yay, this was all great, let's keep doing this" then we have to accept that the US has slid back into the days of McCarthy and earlier, other times when we all lived in our silos and the war in Europe cost far more lives than it should have if the US hadn't stood aside for so long.

If in two years, that's still the case, and if in two years there is still a free Europe out there, then I am going there. I'll be almost 75 but I don't care. Because, honestly, we who voted against Trump don't deserve any blame at all in this and bashing our heads for four years at our age--we don't deserve that either. We stood strong during a lot. We stood strong during COVID. But standing strong against a criminal madman supported by more than half the voting American population is a bridge too far. I'll do it for two years, until the midterms. But no farther.

I am buying all my expensive goods, like tires, now so it bolsters our current economy. I have unsubb'd from every single corporation that supported Trump. I am weaning myself off Amazon but it played such an important part during COVID, and I live in a small town, that's going to be tough. I will pull in my spending and buy simple food from my local co-op. I believe that what he proposed will cost everyone and the sooner those of us who warned about price rises DON'T pay those prices, the sooner those very people who didn't want to pay Biden's prices, will realize what high prices really mean.

Expand full comment

I am doing a lot of what you are doing. I will not renew my Amazon Prime, plan to buy large ticket items before the inauguration, will look for local sources of the things I would usually not think where they originated from, and Amazon will be my last resort if I truly can't do without or can't find locally. I expect, when the cost of living increases for those who voted for him, they will try to blame something other than the tariffs, the inability to process foods etc due to deportations (because you KNOW Americans will not step in and do those jobs!). I too am waiting for the midterms and fervently hope for a course correction at the polls.

When there are opportunities to protest, write letters, donate, vote, I will be doing that. I won't leave however, my kids and young grandkids are here and I have to stay and work to make things better for them if I can. Right now, it sucks.

It's not Amazon's fault. If anything don't buy Teslas and unsubscribed from X. Also Musk will now reap the benefits of our Space program while he wields power over countries at war like Ukraine, taking away Starlink to aide Russia.

Expand full comment

Jeff Bezos will have to go head to head with Musk now for “space”

Expand full comment

too late- Musk is in the in crowd at least for now. Bezos will have to wait 4 years.

Never mind his existing defense contracts and the additional ones he stands to win. What I want to know is what he and 45* said to Zelensky. And why the f*!k was Musk on the call? Oh. Right. Because it was Trump.

Expand full comment

Maybe, but there's a significant amount of foreign made products sold on Amazon. That stuff will be much more expensive when the tariffs take effect, possibly resulting in a significant drop in sales. I never subscribed to Amazon Prime, I've never been on X and I will never buy a Tesla. I simply cannot afford to.

Expand full comment

I subscribe to Prime, never been on twitter/x and can't afford or care to have a Tesla. I agree on what will happen not only to products sold on Amazon but products sold anywhere when/if tariffs happen. My point was that Musk is the one bound at the hip to trump and will be a big part of his administration. The grift and destruction of our government institutions that will be happening during this admin really bothers me.

Expand full comment

Besos is part of that grift. As is Zuckerberg. And Google & Microsoft…there isn’t enough money in the world for these greedy f$$$s.

Expand full comment

It's a 'dance with the devil '. trump doesn't like it if someone gets more attention than he does and will cast anyone aside who does that. I totally agree with the concerns you express in your last sentence.

Expand full comment

Not Amazon’s fault?? Amazon is Bezos, Bezos is Amazon. People canceled their WaPo subscriptions…but what will really hit em where it hurts? Cancelling Prime and everything associated with Amazon. NOT buying from them. I got rid of it years ago and have only used it when I was absolutely forced to.

and all this because eggs are too high is more important.

One of my Republican friends of a friend has her own chickens and charges $8 a dozen. Hmmmn

Expand full comment

what?!! That's price gouging! oh wait- Harris had a plan for that.

Expand full comment

Off subject, but I question if the egg price from an individual, farm-direct seller is too high. Freshly laid eggs purchased within a day of availability are premium (incredible taste) and are sold at higher prices than those in a grocery from a mass distributor. That's where the real price gouging occurs.

IF you have the resources , just go if you want. There is a sweet woman on YouTube, in her 70's that moved to France. It's called Janice In France. She give a LOT of information on the good, the bad, the difficult, and the ugly. I also follow a young man who is an author, a producer and content creator wh0 has lived in Paris for years and earlier this year got his French citizenship. There are a LOT of Americans living overseas so start looking is you are rally serious then you WILL be prepared when the time comes.

Thank you Adam. You are one brave man. Your courage gives me hope and keeps me from falling into the abyss. We need to really brace ourselves for some difficult outcomes, but it is good to let Trump voters (unfortunately along with the rest of us) enter the FAFO phase.

This is true. While many say we must "respect the voices and victory" i agree, we respect the victory and respect the RIGHT of these folks to vote. But we dont respect the viewpoints of some.

We need to hear what Americans are saying, present solutions, and stop stoking fear. Its a great time to be alive, even after tuesday. Happy warriors

From scrolling the feeds of my cousins who are excited about the outcome , there is a lot of hatred for democrats and the Dem party leaders. This is coming from former democrats who are still sore about being called deplorables by Hillary Clinton. There is a lot of anger and hatred which is why I think we have to hear them out and try to de-escalate. We have to show them that we are not the evil people their leaders say we are. We can listen without agreeing and we need to do that. We cannot write them off with condescension. We just might find out that we are more alike than different, although we might disagree as to the means to the end. Thank you for everything you’re doing and will do.

Respectfully, how can one have that conversation with people who are reading, hearing and seeing media that paints Democrats as naive at best, "woke" Socialists, or devil worshipping pederasts? There's not much middle ground here, especially when religion gets involved.

Expand full comment

At first it’s not really a conversation. You just have to listen, knowing full well that what you’re hearing is what they’ve been fed. They just want to be heard and the more we cast them off as a bunch of idiots the angrier they will get. But I’ve found that if you listen, without judging, you can build rapport and trust and an opportunity for influence.

I’m saying distinguish the people from the man they voted for.

Tom Nichols, on the Bulwark podcast, was weighing the benefits of preventing Trump from acting as he wishes, or just letting him go to town and act out promises. The problem is that not only will the people who voted for him get it good and hard, but the rest of us will as well.

Expand full comment

True. But we can, and must, prepare ourselves for the worst while doing everything we can to resist the maga effort to destroy democracy. The people who support trump will not do so and they will therefore be hit the hardest. This is what I mean when I say that they will all live to regret their support for him. By preparing ourselves we will be better able to weather the storm and have better conversations with them when they start whining.

I sure have been annoyed by everyone piling on Biden and Harris as if this mess is all their fault. Piling blame on the wrong people seems to be one of the fundamental forces of human behavior. Instead, we gotta make sure everyone knows all the stuff Trump’s about to do and why it is wrong.

Democracy requires that the citizens are well informed and have the capacity to critically think and separate falsehoods/opinions from facts. There is a reason why dictatorships target academic figures for persecution. When education is labeled as indoctrination you know we're at that point where we need to start questioning the choices of majority of Americans. For the future survival of democracy we really need to ensure that education is not a privilege but a right for the future generation. I think this gets at the root cause of the rise of MAGA. People who do not have the ability to discern charlatans from decent/honest human beings like Adam.

so true- I think greed and power are also to blame.

I think cult analogy is valid with MAGA crowd but the ones in control of cults are usually well educated or at least should understand what they're doing is morally wrong (ahem Harvard educated Republicans) but all that is an after thought because their desire for greed and power overrules any sense of moral.

I am thinking about the future. I am thinking of moderates, on both sides. Can a ticket like that win? What do we call that? The Patriot Party? Who do we pick? Should it be Hispanics, African Americans, White, mixed race? Do we give up on far left (can't win) and definitely rid ourselves of the far right? Third parties have historically not come close to winning, so I wonder if the far left would be on board with moderate Dems / Indies running under the D umbrella? We know the issues that will turn people away. Do we shoot ourselves in the foot again by supporting these issues. This is the only thing that keeps me looking forward. I know one thing, whoever runs to defeat MAGA in the future needs to start soon. Just listen and talk to people , everywhere. Go where you may be hated. Talk to people of all stripes. Do it in a non political setting, at first. Most Dems and moderate Rep's hate tRump. Let's give Cheeto-Lini time to get himself in deep doo doo with Americans, which we know he will. The one person who can beat tRump is tRump.

I wish I shared your optimism. Frankly, while i've suffered many previous setbacks, even the death of loved ones, nothing has shaken me as much as the idea that the country I love purposely chose a comprehensively evil man, a man who has repeatedly demonstrated his thoroughly evil nature, over an honorable, highly-qualified woman. I've been disappointed with the results of many elections, but there has never been an election that left me fearing for the country as I do now. I find it impossible to conclude that we are anything other than a thoroughly racist and misogynistic people. I didn't believe that before Tuesday night, but the results of this election made that conclusion inescapable. Sadly, it is my opinion that America deserves what will follow. It's not like Americans didn't know who this evil man is. Americans knew he was evil and they chose him anyway. I don't know what more there is to say. I'm old so I probably won't have to endure the worst of what's coming, but I feel bad for the future my sons will face. I wish i could summon the same optimism you're expressing. I just don't see it. America chose well known evil in preference to an honorable, highly-qualified non-white woman, and I can't escape the conclusion that it was because she was a non-white woman. They weren't deceived; they knew what they were getting in tRump. Now, parents will be able to say, "Son/daughter, if you manage to be convicted of 36 felonies; lie every time you open your mouth; sexually assault many women; try to extort the leader of a foreign country in order to win an election; steal classified documents and hide them and lie about it when caught; and if you try to overturn the results of a legitimate election, you too might be president." We're not just "going back;" we've set a new standard for what makes a person qualified to be president. That's not going to change in four years.

His supporters never believed his campaign rhetoric other than "trump will fix it" and "make america great again". When he actually does (or tries to do) every evil thing he said, I believe that they will certainly feel the pain and come to regret their support for him. They will then look for people to commiserate with. When they come crying to us, we must be understanding, compassionate and have friendly, calm conversations with them. By not taking an "I told you so" approach we can create a welcoming approach that might bring positive changes to their thinking.

I will join also. I feel I need to do something to fight back. It'll be hard to get through to Trumpers to help them realize what a massive mistake they made by voting for him. Do keep in mind only 65% voted he won 50% so that means he actually has 33% support. Not sure that makes sense.

when the economy goes bad, I truly hope the people who voted for him suffer, loose jobs, groceries cost to high maybe lose their homes (unfortunately we will suffer too) Then they will have only themselves to blame and then they will learn that MAGA needs to be flush into history. Now I hear the project 2025 is the new agenda, those older folk who voted may see the SS go away, how will they feel then about DT then. Again, only themselves to blame.

There are now 2 sides in this country. The side that puts grocery prices over country and the ideal that this country was founded on and over the brave solders that fought for her on the beaches of Normandy, the jungles of SE Asia or in the Pacific.

the other side is us who values those men and what they fought for (including my late dad) and for what our country stands for. I am willing to pay more for a gallon of gas or a loaf of bread to preserve our democracy and freedom.

And finally, I came to the decision today about a new mandate for myself. it is for any Trumper. "If it's a fight for this country you're looking for I'll accommodate you otherwise join the fight or shut up, move along and be on the wrong side of this fight and movement."

sorry for my long post but I've had enough of these dimwitted Trumpers and I'm mad!!

Yes!!! Your insight is invaluable during these challenging times. I’m looking forward to building an alliance that will seek and demand accountability for “We the People…” if/when lines are crossed. One of the senators and representatives are accountable to everyone in the country not just their party. They’re paid to find solutions not block opponents because they don’t want them to get credit.

I recognize this happens on both sides… And sometimes there are messaging votes to use for sound bites . We realize politics is a game, but there are too much game playing….

I believe light needs to be shined on all the nefarious players as well as the commendable ones throughout the next four years .

If there’s a way we can be kept apprised of major bills, consequential bills anything that requires more voice from the constituents it would be great to keep us informed or let us know where to go .

Again, we appreciate all you do and I’m sure many people in your network here have their own resources, but maybe we can have some more talk and lives .

I pray all your friends and families find peace and joy throughout the holidays and always .

We will do the best we can until we can do better… And then we’ll do better.

Be well
